The Island Charms of Pulau Ketam

Had an enjoyable day out at Pulau Ketam (Crab Island) with Su. The day started at KL Sentral where we took the KTM Komuter to Pelabuhan Klang (RM5.40 one way). The train was really comfortable, with very few passengers on board probably because it is a long weekend in Kuala Lumpur. The ride took about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The Pulau Ketam jetty is just across the road from the Pelabuhan Klang KTM Komuter Station and exceptionally easy to spot. There are at least three ferry/speed boat options to choose from. We decided on an air-conditioned speed boat (RM16 two-way). The operators of the ferry/speed boats were friendly and helpful.

The ride to Pulau Ketam took about 35 minutes and was pleasant as the Straits of Malacca was relatively calm. Along the way, we saw mangrove swamps on both sides of the straits.

Pulau Ketam is predominantly a Chinese fishing village. Upon our arrival, we walked around the busier and more “touristy” side of the island to take in the sights. We saw rows of seafood restaurants along the main street. After our first round of walking, we had lunch at one of these restaurants. The food was so-so and rather pricey (one small white pomfret + small vegetable + 2 can drinks = RM77!). Noticed other blogs too had similar reviews.

After lunch, we had our second round of walking around the island. This time we walked around the less busy and touristy side of the island. It was quite pleasant taking in the various design of the floating houses that are built on stilts, the street art, the main square, Chinese temples, the school and even a Maybank branch! There were also a few houses that were blasting music. If only it was not as hot as it was – but must say the breeze really helped.

All in, had a good time. We ended the day with coffee at a hipster café in Nu Sentral. Pulau Ketam could really do with such a café. “Spoilt” visitors such as myself could then hang out in an air-conditioned area while waiting for the sun to go down and then resume our walk around the island.

Would certainly recommend Pulau Ketam as a day trip to experience a simple life on a quiet island. Suggest to give the food at the main street a pass. If hungry, try the stalls in the non-tourist section of the island.
